Comment: Thanks! You had some really good points and I will take your advice.

Question: My daughter is 13 and so far so good. She' no angel by any means. I just wanted to know how to keep her on the right path in life. I keep telling her that one mistake can ruin the rest of your life. And I am also already having anxiety about her starting high school.

Answer: Dear Denise:

So you daughter is 13 and she is doing okay but you are freaking out about having a 13 year old? Well that is quite normal. Realize that emphasizing making one mistake and ruining your whole life does not mean much to a 13 year old.

Why not find some books on parents and the teenage years. Spend as much time as you can googling the teen years, parenting teens etc... and read up on what you find.

Next, just spend good quality time with your daughter. Spending lots of good quality time and building up the relationship between the two of you will be the best immunization against many of the teenage issues you fear. Remember to tell her how much you love her and how proud you are of her.

I can tell you want to do the best job possible with her and she is lucky to have a mom who does.

Best Wishes!

M Kay Keller
