Subject: my 2 year old

Question: Hi, I'm so tense I really need sum advice. plz help. I'm a mother of two. My daughter Amal is 2 years old and my son is 2 months old. my daughter is exhibiting a very bad behaviour. She says no to anything I say or tell her to do, for example, if I say "Amal is a good girl'.... she says immediately "no Amal is a bad girl' or when I say "plz throw this in the trash" she says no I'll not throw this in the trash.

She never did this before. Actually I was living with my family away from my husband for 6 months. My husband had a new job so he went to Saudi Arabia and the whole process for family visa took 6 months and when I came to my husband Amal is acting strangely... plz tell me what to do. Because this is very annoying and my husband hit her 2 times which made me really worried. plz plz help

Answer: Dear Bushra:

First of all your husband needs to understand that hitting a child will only make them more angry inside and it is nothing more than an adult bullying a child. It is unacceptable under any conditions or circumstances. If you allow him to hit the child you are just as guilty of not protecting and nurturing your child, regardless of what the cultural background.

Next, you child is not exhibiting very "bad" behavior. She is exhibiting oppositional behavior. Two years old are learning to establish themselves as separate human beings, separate from their caregivers. They often do this by resistance. It is a stage a perfectly normal stage of development and will disappear with age. The best way to handle this stage is to ignore the behavior.

Best Wishes!
