Teen son playing with condoms

Questioner: Kevin

Subject: My Teenage Son

Question: My 14 year old son just recently found a box of Trojans Condoms, and he has been experimenting with them behind my back. I don't mean he is sexually active, since he is not, he is just trying them on and playing with them.

My question is: How do I get him to stop this behavior, and how do I explain about condoms to him and their purpose?

Thanks for your time.

Answer: Dear Kevin:

I don't know that you get him to stop. Him knowing how to use them could keep you both from being a grandparent and a father some day down the road before you either one are ready to do so.

Sounds though like he is just curious. It may even been sexually arousing to him.

How you explain to him about condemns is the same way you discuss sex with him. Upfront and in the correct phrases. Maybe you could visit the local planned parent facilities and ask for reading material and then discuss it with him. Sometimes parents are less embarrassed when they have approved reading materials to discuss.

Have the talk and let him know he can come to you whenever he has questions. Do all you can now to keep the lines of communication OPEN, no matter how uncomfortable you maybe.

Best Wishes!
