Potty Training

Questioner: Vikki

Subject: potty training

Question: my daughter is showing some signs of potty training example she holds herself even when she has a nappy on when shes done something in her nappy she wants to take it off she is nearly 21months old how do i start the training or should i wait till Xmas as she is 2.

Answer: Dear Vikki:

I believe in allowing the child to lead us through their own communication. By all means she seems to be uncomfortable with her diapers. Go ahead and get the potty chair out. Let her take sometime to get use to it before you get serious. Let her see you go as well. (Modeling is always effective with children of the same sex.)

Then when you get serious ask her every two hours if she has to go, sit her on the potty for a few minutes (I use to read a story to my children and now they have potty books!).

Do Not get upset when she has an accident. Do use pull ups so she can take them off when she wants to go herself.

Realize it takes time and may take longer than you think. Be patient with her and yourself.

Best Wishes!
