17 year old asks how to communicate with parents

Questioner: Chad

Subject: mother son relationship

Question: im 17 years old and have a problem with the way i was raised.
I live with my mom and step dad who i dont get along with at all because he acts like a dick to me and trys to punish me like a real father should do. The problem i have is that my mother sits by as i get punished and i would prefer if she would handle me and not some asshole she married. Mabey im wrong but if u have any words of wisdom that would be great...thanks

Answer: Chad,

Parents often make the mistake of allowing a step parent to correct or discipline their child. This of course builds up resentment in the child.

Have you tried talking to you mother? I would suggest using lots of I statement and not using foul language when you talk to an adult. If you want them to see you as grown up and hear what you say with respect then say what you have to say with respect.

Another thing to do is focus on the fact that you are 17, do what you have to do to stay out of trouble and realize that when you are 18 you are legally an adult and capable of making your own life at that point. I know this doesn't seem like the answer you want to hear however reality is you cannot control your step father or you mother only yourself. Make good decisions and stay out of trouble. Treat others with respect and focus on your 18th birthday!

Best Wishes!
