Subject: Frightened behavior
Question: I have a 7 week old daughter who is exhibiting strange behavior. She was born 2 weeks early and is currently being treated for GERD with Zantac and Bethanechol and is formula fed Enfamil AR.The treatment for GERD has significantly reduced her fussiness and has helped her sleep better - deeper and more comfortably, however we have noticed that after her evening nap (between 4-6PM) when she sleeps particularly deeply she has a period of time (it varies) where she cries and acts terrified. She will wake normally from sleep, eat a little bit then start crying around the bottle (like she used to do before GERD treatment started) so I stop feeding her and try to burp her - she cries louder. Giving back the bottle doesn't help, pacifier doesn't help, and when we hold her she just stares at us with very wide eyes and screams even more. Putting her down doesn't help. She really seems terrified! Then at some point she falls asleep and when she wakes back up a few minutes later, she's fine. She finishes eating, and then is happy and awake. Any idea what's going on?
Answer: Dear Robyn,
Although I can hear your frustration and concern. I am not a medical doctor. I have no idea. However ask your doctor and if there is nothing physically wrong then try infant massage. Maybe it is just indigestion or gas. Gas bubbles can be terribly painful.
