In our society we have come to understand that people who suffer from Alcoholism drink to their destruction and that people who suffer from drug addiction do drugs that harm them. What we don't understand is that we have an unspoken tier of appropriate addictions. Being an alcoholic is better than being a drug addict, being a drug addict is better than being a sex addict and so on and so on.
What we don't realize is that all addictions are harmful for the people experiencing the disease and the people who love them (Al Anon). Some of the more "socially appropriate addictions" are so pervasive they are considered the norm. Workaholic, Gamblers, Spenders, Hoarders, Debtors and Under earners are just a few of the less obvious addictions that also slowly erode the happiness and function of a person's life and the people who love them. Each of these has a 12 step group that offers help for people who have only the "desire" to change their lives! Google each one.
