Subject: baby's odd behavior
Question: My 7 month old grandson has been hitting himself in the face (mostly in the mouth)for months now. We thought it was normal behavior at first, but now that he holds rattles and other toys, he does it with the toy in his hand and appears to be hurting himself, although he does not cry.
None of my other 4 grandsons ever did this, nor did my daughters as babies. Is this normal behavior?
Answer: Dear Liane, There could be many reasons...the one that sticks out in my mind is he is trying to tell you something. Is there anyone who could be hitting him in the mouth? Have you asked his parents if they are concerned about his behavior. You don't mention the parents in this question at all so there is no information for me to make conclusions.
Sometimes babies will hit themselves because they can't figure out what is causing their pain. You see they don't know yet that the hand they are looking at is attached to their body or the foot they are chewing on is their own. Sometimes we worry too much.
