4 week old and sleeping arrangements

Questioner: Ginger

Subject: Advice about sleeping...?

Question: Hi There, I'm hoping you might be able to give me some advice on this subject... I have a 4-week-old son. When my husband and I first brought him home from the hospital, we decided to co-sleep with him for a while, since it seemed to soothe him and we all got a better night's sleep.

He sleeps very well in the bed with us- only wakes once during the night for a feeding (then wakes again early in the morning). We take all the precautions for safe co-sleeping (no pillows, heavy blankets, etc.) and he's very cuddly- he loves snuggling into one of us.

The trouble is getting him to sleep in his basinette- he won't! Although the basinette is in our bedroom, our son doesn't want to sleep in it, not even for naps during the day. We'll put him in it when he falls asleep, and 10 minutes later he's awake again. If we lie down with him in the bed for naps, he sleeps fine. We don't mind co-sleeping, but it would be nice to be able to have him take naps in the basinette during the day, so I can get some housework done!

Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Thank-you! Ginger

Answer: Dear Ginger, The good news is your baby enjoys co-sleeping. He enjoys it alot. He is letting you know in no uncertain terms he is not willing to settle for anything less than contact comfort. Good for him. He is a smart 4 week old! :)

In the bigger scheme of things, the housework can wait. Trust me when I say that when he is 21 and off at college you are not going to regret taking naps with him and reminding yourself that you let the housework slide. Adjust your expectations of the house and yourself and get a nap with your son. He will be all grown up in the blink of an eye.

Do you also do infant massage? Sometimes this meets an infants need for contact comfort and they sleep deeper.... Thank you for writing to me.

He is lucky to have parents who care so much!
