Why is my baby hitting himself?

From: Julie

Subject: 5 months hitting himself

Question: My 5 month old son has been swinging his arms up and down in a hitting motion while eating his bottle for about a month and has just started hitting himself in the face with his fist, toys and binki, it seems like it is pretty hard and probably hurts. I have read some stuff that says it could be eczema if he is scratching also, he does have extremely dry skin %26 scratches at his tummy and head/face. Other stuff says that he could be frustrated because he wants something he can not ask for, any ideas? Thanks for your help!!

Answer: Dear Julie,

He is old enough to start teaching him sign language to help him express himself and his emotions. Start with the feeling words. I have some great youtube videos on my youtube channel at youtube.com/mkaykeller

I also have some fabulous books I recommend for infants and toddlers. You can find these by either going to my website at mkaykeller.com or by viewing them on my blog at mkaykeller.blogspot.com by clicking the menu item labled, "Recommended Readings."

Enjoy them and have fun with your little one. Try and worry less.

Best wishes!
